Mermaid Top DIY

All the way back in 2013 I made my first viral pin…a seashell bra top I made from scratch for my Halloween costume. This bra received so many compliments and I still love it to this day! Seeing as how this idea is still being loved by so many, I figured I’d make a tutorial. Granted, this was years ago, but the technique is still just as sound!

Keep reading to see some more inspiration, as you can really get creative with this!

Shopping List:

A bra you don’t care if you ruin and that goes with your color scheme. Just make sure it fits properly so you don’t have any gapes or discomfort. I used a cheap bra from Walmart, but you could also use a bralette if you want more coverage or even a swimsuit! It’s up to you and your personal style.

Shells…obvi. If you live in a coastal town, odds are your local tourist shop has shells for sale or you can pop over to the beach, it may be tricky finding just the right size though. If you don’t have access to this luxury, your local crafts store should have shells to choose from or you can order online.

Beads! You can recycle an old necklace, or get some pretty jewels from a craft store. Again colors are up to you! Get creative with it.

E6000 adhesive glue. This stuff is what holds it all together, it is super strong! Beware, it’s recommended you use this outdoors or in a very well ventilated area, as inhaling the fumes may be harmful. I’m sure there are more safe options out there, but this is just what I used. Feel free to recommend something else in the comments!

Instructions:

  1. Create your plan for how you want it to look and gather all materials.

  2. Set up your work area, preferably outside as to not inhale the fumes from the glue.

  3. Starting with the largest items first, start glueing into place, pressing each item firmly into the fabric for about 10 seconds. Try your best not to get glue on your fingers!

  4. Let air dry over night! And then it’s ready to wear. Just be extra careful as you try it on!
